Postpartum Obesity

Postpartum Obesity

Obesity after pregnancy. Pregnancy is a special and delicate moment for the woman and requires special care. The gestational obesity-post is a common problem and creates great risks for the mother and the baby .

The fact that women gain excessive weight during the gestational period is a risk factor with complications such as diabetes , deep vein thrombosis, hypertension, and preeclampsia, especially at the end of gestation.

Another important item is the association of obesity in gestation with the highest mortality rate of newborns , since the average weight of the baby is higher than normal, this may cause obstetric risks during normal delivery and an increase in the index of Cesarean sections.

Mothers who regain their preweaning weight after birth, remain much healthier and less likely to develop other ills. A study by the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, found that more than one-third of gestational deaths were obese women.

The study also concluded that obesity increases tenfold the risk of a woman having respiratory infections and doubles that of suffering from headaches and heartburn . In addition, it has been quoted in the article that obese pregnant women are more prone to suffer heart attacks.

The genetic test of post-gestational obesity is a new procedure that assesses whether or not the future mother will tend to develop obesity in the first pregnancy .
